Tony abbott to meet premiers over holden closure

THE Prime Minister has spoken to John Howard ahead of the closure of Northern Rock's Hazelwood mine, following his promise of "all-party" support in the final parliamentary term.

The Prime Minister has met the premiers of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria for talks over the closure of the mine, which has been given a full mine plan and will close on August 31.

He is also meeting Mr Howard by phone on the weekend to ensure he will not back off any final support for the mine and the closure he announced a week ago.

He said he was confident that it would be successful, and the company must make a plan to meet the "environmental, health and workplace wellbeing" needs of workers.

"The Prime Minister has indicated a support for the project, and I am looking forward to having him on the phone with me at this very important time," he said.

Mr Howard said the final decision would be made in the future.

He confirmed he had already met with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and State Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls in Melbourne, and that Mr Nicholls wanted to meet with the federal government about the project.

"We have agreed a plan to deliver a comprehensive mine plan, to ensure a safe, successful, sustainable, all-Australian mine that is safe for all and the environment and is not linked to any particular region or community," he said.

"If necessary, we will work through with the federal Labor Party."

The Northern Rock mine will close over its next four years, and has received its final environmental assessment approval.

Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls said Labor, Greens and the crossbench were prepared to consider whether the industry should be allowed to close if there were too many existing mines with problems in the community.

"All our members - both on the north and south, all my colleagues in the community - know the impact the mine will have on families and the communities in these communities," he said.

"[The] coal industry is one of the worst polluters on the planet, and a huge part of the cost of the company will be directly or indirectly.

"So it is important for the people of Tasmania to really be able to have a voice, because I know that as an area with a very strong environment, we understand the impacts of coal that will be coming from this mine very well."

Environmental groups welcomed the announcement of Mr Howard's plans.

"John Howard has clearly demonstrated his leadership on climate change, particularly the potential effects of coal industry action," said Bill Murray, director of the Australian Conservation Foundation.
